James Blackwell was born in Baton Rouge, Louisiana and grew up locally in Houston, Texas. He graduated from St. Thomas High School and obtained a Bachelor of Business Administration in Finance at the University of Texas at Austin.
After graduating from the McCombs School of Business at the University of Texas, Mr. Blackwell returned to Houston. Shortly after his graduation from UT, Mr. Blackwell first began developing his litigation skills at the University of Houston Law Center, where he earned his doctorate of jurisprudence. While at UH Law, he served several terms on the board of the Advocates, one of the few student-run law school advocacy programs in the nation.
After obtaining his law license, Mr. Blackwell continued to develop his trial skills while working for a litigation boutique in the Houston area. His practice primarily focused on defending person injury matters, including motor vehicle accidents, premises liability, construction defect, toxic tort, products liability, as well as defending commercial litigation matters and various complex multiparty litigation matters. Mr. Blackwell also attained invaluable experience while serving as in-house counsel for Wal-Mart’s Litigation Department. While working for Wal-Mart’s legal department, Mr. Blackwell was responsible for overseeing hundreds of cases throughout an eight state region. Mr. Blackwell’s significant defense experience has been invaluable to his practice, and this experience has afforded a major benefit to both his plaintiff and defense clientele. Mr. Blackwell also spent two years working for a Houston-based oil and gas law firm. This experience has provided him with the skills and knowledge base needed to successfully pursue his clients’ mineral concerns.
